Pantera foi uma banda de metal americana originária da cidade de Arlington, no estado do Texas, no ano de 1981. Formada pelos irmãos Abbott, Vinnie Paul (baterista) e Diamond Darrell (o nome Dimebag Darrell só começou a ser utilizado já nos anos de 1990) (guitarrista). O baixista Rex Brown se juntou à banda no fim de 1981, juntamente com o vocalista Terry Glaze. Em 1987 Phil Anselmo se tornou o vocalista. Após o desmembramento da banda em 2003, quaisquer esperanças de uma possível reunião foram perdidas em 8 de dezembro de 2004, quando Dimebag Darrell foi baleado e morto, enquanto tocava com a banda Damageplan no palco do Alrosa Villa, em Columbus, Ohio.
Formada em 1981, a banda atingiu muito sucesso após a primeira metade da década de 1990 quando a popularidade do heavy metal começava a cair. Inicialmente fazendo um som mais voltado ao glam hard rock, partiram então para o som mais pesado do metal moderno (ou o chamado "power-groove", termo cunhado pela própria banda pois boa parte de suas músicas possuíam riffs marcantes). O Pantera já vendeu mais de 40 milhões de cópias.
